Orlando Pirates confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that their star defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi is going to join United States of America’s Major League Soccer (MLS) side Chicago Fire.
The 20-year-old Bafana Bafana defender’s contract with the US side will run through to 2029 with an option to renew it for the 2029/2030 season.
Chicago Fire head coach Gregg Berhalter said: “We are excited to welcome Mbekezeli to the club as we further strengthen our back line. In his young career, he has already shown high potential and proven himself to be a strong leader and competitor on the international level. We expect immediate impact and room to grow in future.”
A regular with Bafana, Mbokazi from Hluhluwe in KwaZulu-Natal will only join the US side at the end of the current season following an agreement between the two clubs.
