A monetary promise made to ring officials by Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, more than a year ago will continue being just a promise as it’s take longer for it to be fulfilled.
Speaking at Freedom Park, Pretoria, in March last year, McKenzie promised that ring officials would take home R3000 after each an every tournament. He said that the Department of Sport was going to pay a R2000 top-up to the R1000 ring officials receive from promoters after working at tournaments.
“The R2000 purse top-up from DSAC is still between the department and national treasury. From the department side, it’s all systems go, but the national treasury has not yet given approval. So, that’s what the department is still busy with,” Boxing South Africa (BSA) chief executive officer Tsholofelo Lejaka revealed.
McKenzie said last year: “I want to do it right. There will be no referee, no judge that will go into the ring without being paid R2000, which will be underwritten by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC).
“For every boxing match, we will provide R2000 in all nine provinces. Women judges will get the same amount that the men are getting. There’s no discrimination. The money must not be paid after the boxing match, it must be paid before the bout happens.” – Monwabisi Jimlongo
