There are times when Sibusiso Zingange wants to give up on an opportunity to fight for the vacant South African junior-welterweight title even though he’s rated number one by Boxing South Africa (BSA).
Despite that, Zingange, a former SA junior-lightweight champion, is adamant that throwing in the towel in as far as fighting for the junior-welterweight title is concerned, is something he continues to grudgingly dismiss.
Zingange thought he was finally going to fight for the title against Ntethelelo Nkosi only for the bout to be declared a catchweight encounter after the former SA junior-welterweight titlist had struggled to make the required weight. And their fight, which was held at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, in May ended in a draw.
“There has been no offers since I fought against Nkosi in a fight, which is still believe I was robbed. I have tried talking to promoters with a view of getting a shot at the title, unfortunately, I have received no positive news,” Zingange said.
“I will wait for a call from any promoter, who’s willing to bill me for the vacant title. My main concern at the moment is that I’m getting old. I’m 34 years old now. I still want to become a South African champion again because I know that I won’t fight for a world title.”
The SA junior-welterweight title has been vacant for more than a year since it was relinquished by Nkosi when he decided to take part in the WBC Grand Prix. Intially, two-time SA champion Aphiwe Boyiya was due to have fought for the title against Sipho Mahlangu, but that fight never materialised after Zingange’s handlers objected to it.
Then, Zingange was billed against Boyiya and the fight couldn’t take place more than two times. Zingange was then billed to compete for the title against Nkosi and once again, the crown was not at stake during their duel. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
