If all goes well, like it was the case in years gone by, the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) in the Eastern Cape is going to pump millions in tournaments, which will feature South African and world title fights.
However, so far no one from DSRAC is prepared to talk about the latest developments before an announcement is made by MEC for Sport, Sibulele Ngongo, this month.
Our source said: “Apart from the grant that DSRAC gives to promoters for development tournaments, the department is coming back to fund South African and world title fights like it did in the past. An announcement is imminent.”
Contacted for comment, both the department’s general manager for sport and recreation, Awethu Zumana, as well as spokesperson, Andile Nduna, pleaded ignorance.
DSRAC used to fund tournaments for SA and world title fights in the past, but stopped doing so a few years ago. The funding of tournaments was meant for sport tourism purposes.
Meanwhile, Ink Sport can reveal that DSRAC’s grant for development tournaments has been increased as each of four lucky promoters will receive R260 000, up from R166 000. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
