Two-time world boxing champion, Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga, and his team are counting days before they jet out of South Africa for the Philippines ahead of a very important fight against Regie ‘The Filipino Phenom’ Suganob.
Nontshinga clashes with Suganob in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight elimination bout at the Bohol Wisdom Gym, Tagbilaran City, in the Philippines on Saturday next week.
This is a rematch as Nontshinga outpointed the 28-year-old Suganob in an IBF junior-flyweight title defence held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in KuGompo City early in July 2023.
“It’s all systems go. We are leaving for the Philippines this coming Saturday,” Nontshinga’s trainer-cum-manager, Colin ‘Nomakanjani’ Nathan said.
Since defeating Suganob, the 27-year-old Nontshinga has won twice and lost two times. On the other hand, Suganob has recorded five straight wins since losing to Nontshinga.
Eastern Cape-born Nontshinga is rated fourth by the IBF and is 12th in the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) ratings. Suganob is third in the IBF, fourth in the World Boxing Council (WBC) and number one in the WBO. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
