Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi defeated the dreaded COVID-19 and then went on to dish out a solid performance against the British and Irish Lions.
The Sharks speed merchant played a massive role in the Springboks’ 27-9 win over the British and Irish Lions at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday evening.
So impressive was his performance during the game that Mapimpi walked away with the man-of-the-match award.
Mapimpi from Tsholomnqa in the Eastern Cape was one of the try scorers with the other one coming from his Sharks teammate and centre Lukhanyo Am from Debe Nek.
“It was a tough week for us. We lost and we tried everything to come back, come together as a team,” Mapimpi said.
The Boks scored 21 points in the second half after the British and Irish Lions had taken a 9-6 lead in the first stanza. Mapimpi revealed that a ‘simply’ message from SARU director of rugby Rassie Erasmus and Bok coach Jacques Nienaber encouraged them thus they went on to win the match.
Meanwhile, the 31-year-old Mapimpi is expected to play another blinder in the series decider at the Cape Town Stadium next Saturday.
