Manqoba Mngqithi reckons that his team Mamelodi Sundowns deserved to win their MTN8 quarter-final match against Kaizer Chiefs.
The Brazilians beat Amakhosi 2-1 on penalties after the two sides had drawn 2-2 in 120 minutes at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Sunday.
“Look at how many chances we created. We should have wrapped up the game earlier,” the Sundowns co-coach said.
Having led 2-0 in the first 23 minutes of the game and then gave away the lead worries Mngqithi.
“For Sundowns to concede two goals was a big downside of the game because, honestly, we work very hard not to concede. The type of goals we conceded do not suggest that we got such a good defensive block. But unfortunately in football you must accept that,” Mngqithi said.
The former Lamontville Golden Arrows coach admitted, though, that they expected a tough match against Chiefs.
“We knew that it was not gonna be easy from Chiefs with transitions. Fortunately, we managed to win it at the end. It was a game we deserved to win,” Mngqithi concluded.
Meanwhile, Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter admitted that they didn’t have a good start to the game.
“I thought in the beginning of the game we were way off it. Sundowns took command with good possession,” Baxter said.
“Possession when we had the ball was horrid and nervous. Being a goal down didn’t help. I felt gradually we started playing a little bit better. We found a little bit rhythm. Then came the second goal, after that we had a period of 15 minutes where we played well, then we scored a goal in that time. The boys played much better in the second half.”
