Registering their first three points in the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers following a 1-0 win over Ghana’s Black Stars at the FNB Stadium in Nasrec, Johannesburg, on Monday evening was a proud moment for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.
This was the first time Bafana Bafana beat the Black Stars since 2011.
“I’m very proud and happy with what I saw on the pitch with my team. We made a big progress in one week,” Broos said.
“I saw my team playing in Zimbabwe, there was no confidence, no belief in themselves. What l saw today (Monday), l saw a team with confidence.”
That Bafana Bafana have collected four points in two matches has sat well with the Belgian.
“Few days ago, l said when we are on four on six l will be very happy. I thought we could win in Zimbabwe and draw against Ghana. We will see if we can go on like this and make progress like we did this week. We will see where we will end the race,” Broos remarked.
On the other hand, the former Indomitable Lions mentor believes that video assistant referee (VAR) is needed in matches of this magnitude. This comes after Zambian assistant referee Kabwe Chansa flagged Percy Tau’s legitimate goal for an offside.
“In such important games there has to be VAR. Imagine if it was 0-0,” Broos said.
Meanwhile, Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor has lamented their failure to be clinical in front of goals.
“We started well in the first half. It went the way we wanted. We were not clinical upfront, that was the problem. But l was satisfied with the way we played. In the second half we the lost the midfield,” Akonnor commented.
