Putting one over his former team brought a smile on AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy after Usuthu beat Cape Town City 2-0 in a DStv Premiership encounter at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday evening.

McCarthy said that knowing most of the players in the Citizens squad was very key during the match.

“I coached most of these boys. I know their strengths, I know their weaknesses,” McCarthy remarked.

“My boys’ work ethic was fantastic. We tried to play in the right spaces in the right period. We said when we get set-pieces we have to drag them out.”

McCarthy heaped praises on two-goal hero Augustine Mulenga, who netted his brace in the first half.

“We got the two goals. Mulenga came on and showed the same hunger of the old Mulenga that we know,” McCarthy said.

“Very good game of football, two teams cancelling each other out. I think we were fortunate we scored the two goals that gave us the victory.”

Meanwhile, Citizens coach Eric Tinkler didn’t hide his disappointment following the loss.

“We needed 11 warriors out there. In the first half we didn’t show the discipline that we needed to show in terms of formation,” Tinkler said.

“Our structure offensively was poor. We knew what the instruction was in terms of where we needed to break them. We didn’t follow the instructions. In the first half there were players playing according to their own instructions, which was a disappointment.”
