It looks like former world champion Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete’s fight against Tanzanian Iddi Mustafa Ally Said is just a formality and a way of making sure that he shakes off ring rust.
Tete, who fights with Said in an international junior-featherweight 10 rounder at the Booysens Boxing Gym in Johannesburg on Sunday, 12 December, will clash with Jason Cunningham in March next year should he see off the Tanzanian.
This was confirmed by Mlandeli Tengimfene, the manager of the former International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight champion.
“Frank Warren has told us that if Zolani wins then he will be guaranteed a fight against Jason Cunningham for the IBF International as well as the Commonwealth title. It is very important for us to win our next fight,” Tengimfene said.
The 32-year-old Cunningham, a southpaw from Yorkshire, is a Commonwealth junior-featherweight champion. He has 30 wins with six knockouts and six defeats.
On the other hand, Warren is the boss at Queensberry Promotions and has promoted Tete’s fights since 2015.
Meanwhile, Tete has not fought since he was dethroned by World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight titlist Johnriel Casimero from the Philippines in November 2019.
