AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy is humbled after he won the DStv Premiership Coach of the Season award on Sunday evening.
McCarthy won the award ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns co-coaches Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena as well as Lamontville Golden Arrows’ Mandla Ncikazi.
Bafana Bafana’s all time top goalscorer transformed Usuthu into a formidable outfit and led them to second place at the end of the past season. After playing 30 games, AmaZulu finished the season with 54 points – 13 points behind champions Sundowns.
“I couldn’t have done this without my team, my players, my coaching staff,” the former Orlando Pirates forward said.
“I would also like to congratulate all the other nominees, coach Mandla Ncikazi from Golden Arrows, coach Manqoba, coach Rulani and coach Steve. You are the league champions. Usually, the Coach of the Season award goes to the team that won the league. For me, it’s an honour to receive this award.”
The former Cape Town City coach has promised to do better next season in an effort to make sure that AmaZulu continue to be a force to be reckoned with in South African football.
“I’m thankful, I’m blessed. Next year I will come back stronger,” McCarthy concluded.
