South Africa’s most active female boxer and award-winning reigning national flyweight champion Simangele ‘Smash’ Hadebe will be back in the square ring later this month.

Hadebe is scheduled to trade leather with Halima Vunjabei from Tanzania in an African Boxing Union (ABU) female flyweight title contest at the EFC Centre in Johannesburg on Thursday, 24 February. This shootout between the two lasses is going to shown live on ESPN Africa. Vunjabei, who is based in Dar-Es-Salaam, will be making her second trip to South Africa in less than a year. She stopped Nozwelethu Mathontsi from Mdantsane during their fight held at the Meropa Casino in Polokwane last September.

“We are busy preparing for a tough fight. I have watched some of Halima’s fights and I noticed that she swings a lot when she’s fighting. She’s a good boxer, it’s gonna be a tough fight,” the SA female flyweight champion said.

Hadebe fought four times last year something which is rare and she also won the SA female flyweight title in one of the clashes. She defeated Thema Zuma on two occasions (one of the fights was an SA title contest), Melissa Miller and Patience Mastara from Zimbabwe.

“It’s not always the case that we female boxers get to fight all the time. I’m grateful that I continue to get fights,” she said.
