A World Boxing Federation (WBF) Africa heavyweight title fight between Josh Pretorius and Ugandan boxer Shafik Kiwanuka has been called off.

The fight, which was scheduled for Vibrant Sport Centre in Ottery, Cape Town, on Friday evening, was cancelled after Kiwanuka picked up an injury.

“It is with regret and disappointment that we announce the last minute cancellation of the scheduled WBF Africa heavyweight title fight between Josh Pretorius and Shafik Kiwanuka. Due to a last minute, unforeseen hand injury, the Ugandan charge, Shafik Kiwanuka had to withdraw,” a statement from Jackie Brice Boxing Promotions said on Friday evening.

“In a meeting held between the Josh Pretorius management team and the promoter and with the assistance and input from Mr Howard Goldberg of the WBF, it was agreed that the bout would be rescheduled and that Josh Pretorius would be given first option for the bout.”

Meamwhilem Pretorius, a former South African heavyweight champion, has received his full purse.

“I’m very disappointed to not fight as I was ready for this challenge and to win the yitle. But I also don’t want to compete unfairly against an injured opponent. I wish Kiwanuka a speedy recovery,” Pretorius said.
