Akani Phuzi’s handlers believe that he can stand his own against current South African cruiserweight champion Thabiso ‘The Rock’ Mchunu thus he has challenged him to a title contest.

Mchunu is still fresh from a points loss to Argentine boxer Yamil Alberto Peralta Jara, who beat him during a World Boxing Council (WBC) Silver cruiserweight title at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban last month.

“There’s interest from both camps. There’s a possibility that we could see that fight before the end of the year,” Phuzi’s trainer Damien Durandt said.

The 36-year-old Mchunu from KwaXimba in KwaZulu-Natal has not defended his national title in almost six years. Mchunu’s last title defence was in December 2018 against Tommy Oosthuizen.

Meanwhile, Phuzi from Malamulele in Limpopo has not fought since he lost to unbeaten Russian boxer Muslim Gadzhimagomedov in Dushambe, Tajikistan, in October last year.
