It’s going to be a family affair where it will be decided who’s the best when veteran boxing trainer Gert Strydom and his son Shannon Strydom come up against each other from opposite corners in August.
Gert will usher his boxer Shaun Potgieter into war when he defends his South African heavyweight title against Chris Thompson, who’s trained by Shannon, at the Carnival City in Brakpan on Saturday, 23 August.
Potgieter will be attempting to make a first successful defence of the SA heavyweight title he won after he stopped Keaton Gomes in the 11th round in April last year.
The champion suffered a second round stoppage loss to Australian boxer Justis Huni in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) Pan-Pacific and World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Global heavyweight clash Gold Coast, Australia, in January this year.
Meanwhile, Shannon has just led Thompson, who is on a three-fight winning streak, to a third round technical knockout victory over Malawian boxer Mussa Ajibu in Pretoria last week.
And Thompson will be attempting to become a two-time SA heavyweight champion having been dethroned by Gomes in December 2022 while he was trying to make a first defence of the crown.
