After tasting success and reaching the quarter-finals of the WBC Grand Prix in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Ntethelelo ‘Baby G’ Nkosi has no interest in fighting for the South African junior-welterweight title.

According to Nkosi’s Johannesburg-based boxing trainer Damien Durandt, the 28-year-old boxer is concentrating on winning the WBC Grand Prix.

Nkosi relinquished the SA junior-welterweight title in March after making just one defence since winning it in November 2023 and he then went on to pursue glory in the WBC Grand Prix.

“Our focus is not the South African title anymore. We have no interest in that title. We’ve got other guys who are chasing the SA title. Our main goal is to win the WBC Grand Prix and then head towards the world title. I honestly believe that Nkosi can win the WBC Grand Prix,” Durandt said.

Nkosi from Mtubatuba in KwaZulu-Natal started the WBC Grand Prix with a win over Egyptian boxer Marwan Mohamad Madboly in April and then went on to defeat Ju Wu from China last month. Now he will return to Riyadh next month for the quarter-finals of the competition. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
