Continental title-winning Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso from Portugal has dedicated the CAF Champions League trophy to the club’s followers.
The Portuguese led the Tshwane giants to continental glory after they beat Moroccan side AS FAR Rabat 2-1 on aggregate. Sundowns defeated AS FAR 1-0 in the first leg and then drew 1-1 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday evening.
“I dedicate this trophy to the fans, who kept believing in us. They really deserve this trophy. It has been hard for my players and all the credit goes to them. It has not been easy for them and for me,” Cardoso said.
Cardoso, who won the CAF Champions League trophy in his third attempt having failed in two finals before, added: “I want to thank the fans who have travelled. They have been really great and we appreciate their presence and sacrifice. The boys understood the assignment. Matches like these have high emotions and the boys did very well.”
And for their efforts, the 2015/16 African kings have pocketed $6 million (just over R98 million) for winning the Champions League.
