Tall as the Carlton Centre in the Johannesburg central business district, prospect, Ethan Peters, will be hoping to stretch his unbeaten record as he’s fighting in the Shaya Thursday tournament at the Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni.
The 19-year-old Peters is set to collide with Siyanda Mthethwa in a heavyweight bout of the seven-bout tournament promoted by Golden Gloves Foundation.
“He has three wins, three knockouts. He is a new top prospect for South Africa. He’s improving in leaps and bounds,” Peters’ proud trainer, Manny Fernandes, remarked.
Peters, who made his professional debut at the Emperors Palace in November last year, is yet to go beyond round two. His two fights ended in the first round and his third bout didn’t go beyond the second round.
Meanwhile, this tournament sees the return of hugely talented Beaven Sibanda, who fights against Tshepo Mokhele from the Free State in the main bout.
Back from an Achilles injury, Harare-born Sibanda will be fighting for the first time since his win over Filipino opponent Richard Garde in an IBF International minimumweight title contest in July last year.
The co-main bout of the tournament is going to be between Jason Medi and Gracia Mbiya in an eight rounds light-heavyweight clash. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
