Changes are expected to be made at Bafana Bafana as Hugo Broos, who arrived in South Africa on Monday night, begins life as the new national team coach.
The Belgian was appointed new Bafana Bafana coach last week succeeding Molefi Ntseki, who was fired in March after he failed to take the senior South African men’s national team to the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon.
“If you start with a new team you have to start as soon as possible. We will have some meetings to know the team and see what we can do for the next games,” Broos said in an interview with SABC Sport’s Sport Arena on Tuesday.
The former Cameroon coach’s mandate is to take Bafana Bafana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar. And he has declared that he is up to the challenge.
“I like football, I like my job. I’m not afraid of the huge work in South Africa. Four years ago when I came to Cameroon I didn’t know African football. It was more difficult than now. I’m ambitious, I like challenges. We have to work very hard. Cameroon when I came there it was chaos. They didn’t have a team. It was 15 years since they won the AFCON,” Broos remarked.
The 69-year-old Broos won the 2017 AFCON tournament with Cameroon after the Indomitable Lions defeated Egypt 2-1 in the final, which was played in Libreville, Gabon.
Meanwhile, Broos is set to announce his technical team at a press conference in Johannesburg on Wednesday. He is going to have two assistants – one from South Africa and another one from Belgium.
“We have a lot of work to do. We will analyse the team first, see what happened in the last six games for the qualifiers for the AFCON. I have a little idea of what happened,” the Belgian said.
One of the things Broos is going to do is blooding young talent and getting rid of some players, who are 30 years and older.
