Nonito Donaire Junior has successfully defended his World Boxing Council (WBC) bantamweight belt after he stopped his Filipino compatriot Reymart Gaballo at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, United States in Sunday morning (South African time).
Donaire Jr’s vicious left hook to the body in the fourth round ended the all-Pinoy fight with Gaballo getting up and then going down again.
Having defended his crown for the first time since dethroning Frenchman Nordine Oubaali in May, the 39-year-old Donaire Jr wants to become a unified world champion now.
“Unified, that’s what we are looking for. I have been in this game for such a long time. I have had too much to fight,” Donaire Jr said.
The four-division world titlist added that he expected a lot from Gaballo, who is 14 years younger than him.
“I came in, I expected something different from him. He came up with something different than I thought. I thought he was gonna get up, he has a lot of heart. I have no mercy inside the ring,” Donaire Jr said.
Donaire Jr has taken his record to 42 wins (28 knockouts) and six losses while Gaballo lost for the first time in 25 fights.
