Being nominated in the Sportsman of the Year category at the South African Sport Awards is one of world champion Sivenathi ‘Special One’ Nontshinga’s proud moments as an athlete.

The reigning International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-flyweight champion competes for the award against canoeist Andrew Birkett and Springbok lock forward Eben Etzebeth. 

“It’s a big achievement and a well-deserved recognition of my talent and commitment to excellence. I’m so grateful and proud of my accomplishments and I will forever be humble and remain the student of the game,” Nontshinga said.

“This is for every single individual who supported and believed in my capabilities. Gratitude to my team for holding me down during tough times. Their amazing hard work and dedication is unmatched thank you so much.” 

The 25-year-old Nontshinga from East London in the Eastern Cape is grateful to Rumble Africa Promotions (RAP) chairman Teris Ntutu and the promotional outfit’s chief executive officer Nomfesane Nyatela for playing a massive role in his career. 

“All credit to RAP sis’ Nomfesane Nyatela and bhut’ Teris Ntutu for providing me with great opportunities. To all the boxing lovers and boxing fraternity thank you so much your unwavering support,” Nontshinga remarked.

The period under review for the awards is between 1 September 2022 and 31 August 2023. The awards ceremony is going to be held at Sun City, Rustenburg, on Sunday, 5 May. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
