The fact that he’s already the outright owner of a South African championship belt does not mean that national champion Zolisa Batyi is no longer hungry for more ring success.

Batyi desperately wants Boxing South Africa’s green blazer as he will be making the fifth defence of his SA featherweight title when he fights against Lindelani Sibisi from KwaZulu-Natal in East London on Sunday, 25 May.

“I’m in camp already and am training very hard. I’m gonna win again. I will be fighting to get the green blazer to add to my belt,” Batyi said.

The champion was one of the boxers, who received BSA championship belts during a function organised by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture at Freedom Park, Pretoria, in March.

Batyi won the SA title after a second round stoppage of former champion Jeff Magagane at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Sports Complex in Seshego, Polokwane, in December 2022. That was Batyi’s second attempt at winning the title having lost to his former stablemate Asanda Gingqi in his first try.

The four successful defences for Batyi from Eluxolweni in Nxarhuni came via a draw and a win over Abdul-Aziz Kunert as well as victories in fights against Yamkela Phaliso and Lucky Hobyane. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
