The public outcry following the outcome of the vacant International Boxing Organisation (IBO) female junior-lightweight title contest between eventual winner Bernice ‘The Badger’ Ferreira and Ellen ‘The Tigress’ Simwaka refuses to die down.
Ferreira won the fight with two scorecards reading 98-92 and the third having the Johannesburger winning by 97-93. However, Simwaka is unhappy with the results and has since called Ferreira to a rematch as she insisted that the former South African female junior-lightweight champion didn’t win the IBO title.
“I came to the Wild Coast to win a world title, not a track race. I dictated the pace, I controlled the center of the ring and I was the one looking to fight. You cannot be crowned a world champion when you spend the majority of the rounds running away from the action. The fans saw it and the tape proves it,” Simwaka said.
The 34-year-old Simwaka from Malawi was a late replacement after her Malawian compatriot Adidya Mimi pulled out of the fight.
“I stepped up to save this show because I am a professional and a warrior. Now, I am asking the IBO to be just as professional. Let us get back in the ring and see who the real champion is when they actually stand and fight,” Simwaka said.
