After he was shown a red card during Bafana Bafana’s 2-0 loss to Mexico in the 2026 FIFA World Cup opener in Mexico City on Thursday last week, the world football governing body has made Themba Zwane’s life more difficult.

FIFA has handed the Mamelodi Sundowns captain a three-match international ban for after he retaliated against Mexican defender Roberto Alvarado. Zwane was sent off in the 84th minute after a VAR review for an incident involving a slap on Alvarez.

The 36-year-old Zwane’s ban, which was issued under Article 14 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code on Wednesday, is subject to appeal.
