Businessman Sandile Zungu’s desire to transform Durban-based DStv
Premiership side AmaZulu to one of the big brands in South African
football has resulted in him appointing former Cape Town City coach
Benni McCarthy as Usuthu’s new mentor.
The former Bafana Bafana star striker’s appointment comes after Ayanda
Dlamini, who coached AmaZulu from February, quit recently because of
poor results.
The AmaZulu gig is the 43-year-old McCarthy’s first job since he was
fired by the Citizens in November 2019.
‘‘I’m sure you will agree that when you want to build an aspirational
brand, which we want AmaZulu to become, we have to demonstrate that
with the kind of technical staff we build. Benni McCarthy is associated with aspiration,’’ Zungu said.
‘‘The excitement that we have always had about the prospect of Benni
coming to AmaZulu Football Club we couldn’t hide. It’s not so much
about keeping the secret, it’s about the future we will build together
at AmaZulu Football Club. We want to compete on the field, Benni is a
terrible loser, he wants to win all the time.
‘‘It is not a secret that we want to be a top brand in soccer going
forward. We want to finish in the top four this season. And we want to
be the best brand in South Africa come our centenary celebration in 12
years’ time.’’
