The much-loved late former world boxing champion, Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete, has been granted a special provincial funeral by the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa.
Tete, who was gunned down near his Mdantsane home on Friday last week, is going to be laid to rest on Saturday following a funeral service, which is scheduled to be held at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium, a venue that held many boxing tournaments, especially during the 1980s.
A special provincial funeral is organised and supported by the State for distinguished persons, who made a significant contribution. And flags are going to fly at half-mast across the Eastern Cape on the day of the funeral.
Tete, an erstwhile World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight champion, was killed while he was returning from the gym as he was preparing for a 29th November come back, having completed a four-year doping ban last month.
Meanwhile, four suspects – Uzuzole Goqwana, Siphesihle Kolisi, Athandwa Mgangala and Sinebhongo Qhase – appeared at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court this week in connection with the Mdantsane-born Tete’s murder.
