Boxing trainer, Madoda ‘One More Time’ Dyonase, is hurt and disappointed following the last-minute cancellation of his boxer Phaphama Rhonorhono’s fight against Jabulani Makhense, which was scheduled for Event City Middelburg in Moumalanga on Saturday.
The South African welterweight title fight was called off after Makhense failed to make the required welterweight limit at the scales. And instead of trying to reduce the weight, Makhense ran straight to the nearest eatery.
“It’s very bad, we feel hurt by what Makhense did to us. We spent a lot of money preparing for the fight, only for Makhense to do what he did. To say we are disappointed, it’s an understatement,” Gqeberha-born Dyonase remarked.
This was the second time that Rhonorhono’s fight against Makhense was cancelled at the last minute. It was first cancelled when they were due to face off against each other in Malamulele last month.
Meanwhile, Mthatha-born Rhonorhono is yet to fight since he became the South African title following a second round stoppage win over Capetonian Wasim Chellan in September last year.
Interestingly, Chellan has been active, fighting three times since losing to Rhonorhono and he won all the fights by stoppages. – Monwabisi Jimlongo
