Cops revealed on Sunday evening that four suspects had been nabbed following Friday evening’s murder of much-loved former world boxing champion, Zolani ‘Last Born’ Tete.
The 38-year-old Tete was shot dead just outside his home at NU 17 in Mdantsane as he was returning from training.
“Two more suspects have been apprehended, thus bringing the total number in custody to four in connection with the murder of boxer Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot at NU 17, Mdantsane, on 21 August 2026,” a police statement said.
“The first arrest was effected on Saturday, 22 August 2026, at KuGompo City, with a further three arrests made on Sunday, 23 August 2026, one in Mdantsane and two in Scenery Park. The three suspects arrested on Sunday are aged 27, 27, and 28 respectively.
“The SAPS wishes to correct an error regarding the age of one of the suspects arrested earlier on 23 August 2026. The correct age is 27 and not 22 as previously reported.”
The 22-year-old suspect, who was arrested on Saturday, is due to appear at the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of murder and attempted murder.
The attempted murder charge is related to the wounding of the hospitalised 27-year-old female passenger, who was with the late erstwhile World Boxing Organisation (WBO) bantamweight and International Boxing Federation (IBF) junior-bantamweight champion in the car during the shooting.
“A 30-year-old male, who was initially apprehended on 22 August 2026, has been released and remains a potential witness. More arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds and police are continuing to follow up on leads,” the police statement further said.
“Due to the sensitive nature of the on-going investigation, the SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time. We caution the public and the media against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this may compromise the investigation and the integrity of the court proceedings.”
